Piano practice: What should my child be practising, how often and for how long?

Updated: Jan 29, 2023

What should my child practise?

I provide weekly lesson notes for every student. These provide details about what should be prepared for the next lesson.

How can I help?

I believe that the best support you can give to your child and teacher is:

  • Instilling the value of why we practice anything and what the end result looks like.

  • Encouraging creativity as much as applauding the wonderful things they have achieved from preparing the set work for their lessons well.

How often should my child practise the piano?

Regular practice is better than one block of practice. The brain assimilates new information while we sleep, but will not always retain every new piece of information which is why it's good to keep reminding your brain every other day of what you want it to commit to memory.

Ideally, practise three times a week with a gap in between each day starting from the day after the lesson when things are still fresh.

Eg: Your lesson day is Monday, so practice on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday or Sunday.

How long should my child practise the piano for?

Here is a simple guide for the minimum time that your child should practise the piano each week:

  • New Beginners: 30 mins is good for new starters. It's best to break this into 3 x 10-minute slots instead of one block. More practise time is possible by playing through pieces that have already been learned if your beginner has mastered the new piece.

  • Beginners onto their second book or higher: 45 mins per week, minimum.

  • Preliminary/Grade 1/ Grade 2 should be practising 60/75/90 mins per week, minimum.

  • Grade 3/ 4/ 5 should be practising 105/120/150 mins per week, minimum.

  • Grade 6 and upward should be practising for 180mins (3 hours) per week minimum.
